In Austria, the Department of German at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields of German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language and German Teaching Methodology. In addition to that the areas Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Literary Theory and Literature for Children and Young Adults are established. More than 6400 students are enrolled.

Research assistance: active involvement in the implementation of research projects (especially in the Special Research Programme (SFB) "German in Austria – Variation. Contact. Perception" (FWF)) especially in the areas of “Digital Linguistics” (digital language processing, corpus creation and maintenance, metadata enrichment, digitization)
– Contribution to publications / scientific articles
– Contribution to organisation of conferences, meetings, symposiums
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
