The Faculty of Life Sciences, Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute for Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, invites applications for the position of a

Full Professor (W3) for Plant Nutrition and Nutrient Cycling

Starting April 1st, 2021.

The successful candidate will be responsible for research and academic teaching in the division “Plant Nutrition and Nutrient Cycling” at the Thaer-Institute among the agricultural and horticultural sciences at the Berlin Dahlem campus.

We seek a high potential scientist who will lead the division “Plant Nutrition and Nutrient Cycling” focused on the development of efficient, sustainable, and environmentally improving strategies to maintain agricultural and horticultural plants with nutrients. We particularly invite candidates with research and teaching experience on environmentally friendly nutrient management focusing on the increase of quality and harvest potential of horticultural and agricultural crops while ensuring the fertility of the soil and a high land area efficiency. Candidates shall conduct research in the field of adaptation mechanisms to nutrient toxicity that ensure the harvest stability e.g. in the face of climate change. Given that soils and water bodies become increasingly polluted by inputs from fertilizers, the establishment of new nutrient and water management strategies is desired.

The successful candidate will be an internationally leading scholar with problem-solving and innovative research skills, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and the successful application and management of research grants. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment for cooperation with other academic disciplines and scientific institutes, specifically with horticultural and agricultural institutes of national and international universities, colleges, and research facilities.

The teaching duties encompass the full breadth of plant nutrition in the undergraduate and graduate programs at the Thaer-Institute, for example on the topics of nutrient balancing, material balancing, nutrition physiology of plants, soil fertility, mineral and organic fertilizer, and nutrient appropriation.

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the “Berliner Hochschulgesetz”.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching, and specifically encourages qualified female scholars to apply. Scholars from abroad are welcome to apply. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential consideration. Qualified candidates with an immigration background are explicitly encouraged to apply.
