About UIC Barcelona
The Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) founded in 1997, is a private foundation and has its own legal status. As a non-profit institution, our university aims to provide a service to society by undertaking teaching and research activities aimed at professional capacitation and the scientific, cultural and human education of students, as well as undertaking activities to promote culture.
Today, the university encompasses eight faculties in addition to the Doctorate School. UIC Barcelona is home to over 7,500 students, the academic programs offered include a total of 16 Bachelor's Degrees, 27 international double degrees and a wide range of official and professional masters and postgraduate courses. The international character of the university is a basic feature and a necessary one for students. In this respect, 25% of our students are from overseas.
UIC Barcelona hosts 25 Research Groups within two campuses. The Barcelona Campus houses the Humanities, Communication Sciences, Law, Economics and Social Sciences, and Education faculties, as well as the School of Architecture. This campus is also home to the Research Institute for Evaluation and Public Policies, the Institute for Advanced Family Studies, the Institute for Multilingualism and the Doctorate School.
The Sant Cugat Campus is home to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Dentistry. Situated inside the grounds of the Hospital General de Catalunya, practical experience, particularly on this campus, forms the basis of successful learning. This campus is also home to the University Institute for Patient Care and the Bioengineering Institute of Technology.
In October 2016, UIC Barcelona signed the "European Charter for Researchers" and the "Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers" with the aim of encouraging and improving the recruitment of researchers and demonstrating its commitment to this European Commission initiative. In May 2018, UIC Barcelona was recognised by EURAXESS with the HR Excellence in Research Award.
In addition to the HRS4R, and as part of the Catalan University system, UIC Barcelona follows the recommendations of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) in evaluation of research impact and outcomes.

About the FBA-BIST-UIC program
In an effort to push the boundaries of the different areas of research of UIC Barcelona, a new interdisciplinary programme supported by the Fundació Bosch i Aymerich has been devised in collaboration with the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). Within this program a series of R2 and R3 level positions will be funded to bridge the research interests of the BIST research centres and the UIC. The goal of the FBA-BIST-UIC program is to help build a model in which top researchers can be part of state of the art research facilities and environment as well as participating in training activities in a socially innovative and internationally oriented university.
What we are looking for
As part of this ambitious programme, UIC Barcelona opens an international call to cover three postdoctoral positions, at the level of R2 or R3 (tenure track) depending on the candidates, one in each of three broad areas of expertise:
- Dentistry (Sant Cugat Campus)
- Biomedicine/Biocomputing/Bioengineering (Sant Cugat Campus)
- Sustainability in Architecture/Construction/Urbanism (Barcelona Campus)
The candidates will be hired by UIC Barcelona but will hold a dual appointment UIC Barcelona /BIST, and they are expected to develop highly competitive research, knowledge transfer and innovation activities that are complementary to the lines of research developed by UIC Barcelona research groups and institutes. In addition, the candidates are expected to develop strong ties with the research groups in the BIST and, depending on their profile, to lead the development of new labs and research structures.
The candidates will be interacting with several research groups and offices in UIC Barcelona, the BIST and outside and, especially in the case of R3 candidates, will be responsible for raising private and public funding for their research activities, thus strong relational skills are a must.
These are three-year R2 or R3 positions, with the possibility of becoming tenure track positions depending on the profile of the candidates.
The start date at UIC Barcelona will be September 1st, 2020, although this may be adapted in line with the requirements of the successful candidates.
In May 2018, UIC Barcelona received recognition from EURAXESS via an HR Excellence in Research Award that ensures that the selection of candidates is carried out only based on criteria for excellence.
1) In line with the "Selection" principle, selection committees will be established for the different positions. The process for nominating and appointing the selection committee will be transparent and will be made public. The selection committees will be independent, the members will have no conflicts of interest and the decisions will be objective. The composition of the committee will be appropriately diverse. To achieve this, we will consider:
- minimum of 3 members;
- gender balance; and
- inclusion of external experts.
2) All applications will be examined. The process will involve a preselection to verify eligibility and a preselection of candidates for personal interviews. The same selection committee will participate in all the steps. The process will be fully transparent, except for the fact that candidates will be externally identified by an anonymous ID.
The selection process for the FBA-BIST-UIC programme includes:
- An independent committee of experts who evaluate applications and generate a shortlist of candidates. The committee will include members of UIC Barcelona, the BIST and others external to both institutions.
- A public oral defence by finalists: presentation of their background (both academic and teaching) and their research project/s. Following this presentation, the committee will ask a number of questions to conclude the defence. The defence will take 60 minutes in total.
How to apply
May 11th: Call is issued
June 11th: Deadline for reception of CVs
June 18th: List of accepted candidates
June 25th: Decision on shortlisted applicants

The candidates are required to have a PhD in any scientific or technology areas related to one of the three open positions, with 2 years (ideally 5) or more postdoctoral experience in academic, industry or professional activities.
The candidates are expected to hold outstanding academic or technology transfer records, that will be evaluated based on quality and impact, following the DORA recommendations.
