Wageningen University & Research Animal Breeding and Genomics is looking for:

Junior Researcher in the area of fish breeding

Are you the Junior researcher with interested in genotyping and phenotyping strategies and want to support our research activities in the design of breeding programs? Do you want to preform academic research on the analysis of datasets from some of our breeding programs that apply novel tools? We would like to get in contact with you.

We have a challenging position to support our research activities in the design of breeding programs and phenotyping strategies. We are looking for an enthusiastic early stage researcher (MSc) to perform academic research on the analysis of datasets from some of our breeding programs that apply novel tools, including genotyping and phenotyping strategies.
Most of the research will be addressing questions arising from our aquaculture breeding programs and is conducted in collaboration with colleagues and relevant stakeholders. A large database of images, phenotypes and genotypes is available for several fish species to develop genotyping, selection, and phenotyping strategies.
Successful candidates are reliable and accurate in analysing complex datasets and are creative in answering research questions using novel technologies and data analysis methods. A passion for fish is highly appreciated.

The position is available within Wageningen University & Research Animal Breeding and Genomics, that combines the activities of Wageningen Livestock Research and Wageningen University in the field of animal breeding and genomics.
A challenging position for 38 hours a week, with, depending on your experience, a competitive salary from a minimum of € 2.835,- to a maximum of € 3.895,- for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Wageningen University (scale 9). We offer you a temporary contract for one year, with the possibility of extension for another year.

Offer Requirements

Specific Requirements

You have an MSc with at least one of the following subjects: statistics, animal or plant breeding, genetics, bioinformatics, genomics.
Further preferred skills:

  • Programming skills in relation to genetic and genomic data analysis
  • Be able to handle large data sets; Experience with image data or machine learning methods is a plus
  • Proficiency in scientific writing and attention to details
  • Experience with modelling and simulation in R
  • Good organizational and excellent communication skills (in English)
  • Ability to work in a team of diverse scientists and multidisciplinary teams
