Project: DIVERT – DIVERsity in Third-Level Education

Many Universities and Educational Institutions have expanded their global reach, targeting the internationalisation of undergraduate and postgraduate education. This is enriching the academic and intellectual experience of student and staff communities. Internationalisation of education is highlighting, in particular, diversity in nationality, ethnicity, religion and race among both staff and students and requires appropriate supports. In the main, Universities want to embrace diversity, but do not understand how to do this from a legal and strategic perspective. They know that they should understand legal requirements, develop strategies, policies and procedures, but do not have the framework which can support them in doing this. In the University of Limerick, we are interested in supervising a project which develops such a framework, to which could be piloted in Ireland, and adaptable in other EU countries.

We would like to support a researcher to make a proposal for the Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Fellowships 2020 (https://www.iua.ie/for-researchers/marie-sklodowska-curie-actions/funding-calls-and-deadlines/individual-fellowships/). The researchers’ background could be legal, sociology, human resources or similar, but anyone with an interest in Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Human Rights may be suitable for this project.

If successful, the research fellow will be based at the University of Limerick, for a proposed length of 2 years. The project will be co-supervised by Prof Ita Richardson (https://www.lero.ie/people/ita-richardson) and Dr Lydia Bracken (https://www.ul.ie/artsoc/faculty-research/lydia-bracken). Prof Richardson has responsibility for the Equality and Human Rights portfolio in the University of Limerick. Dr Bracken is the Assistant Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science. The supervisors will support the applicant in writing the proposal, and will also interact with the application supports provided by the University of Limerick - see https://www.ul.ie/research/node/3761/. The University Equality and Human Rights Strategy is available at https://www.ul.ie/UL_Equality_and_Human_Rights_Strategy.pdf. UL holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award (Expanded Charter).
