About UIC Barcelona

The Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) founded in 1997, is a private foundation and has its own legal status. As a non-profit institution, our university aims to provide a service to society by undertaking teaching and research activities aimed at professional capacitation and the scientific, cultural and human education of students, as well as undertaking activities to promote culture.

About the Open position

The Department of Basic Sciences, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is offering a teaching assistant position (predoctoral, R1) in order to participate in the practical training on topics related to introduction to bioinformatics and computational biochemistry.

What we are looking for

A recent MSc graduate (or expecting to graduate in Summer 2020) aiming to pursue a PhD in a field such as Quantum (Bio)Chemistry, Molecular Simulations, Structural Bioinformatics or Machine/Deep Learning techniques applied to such topics. The candidate is expected to complete a PhD thesis in three years starting in September 1st 2020.

Key duties

The candidate is expected to integrate in the new Computational Biochemistry and Biophysics Lab led by Dr. Jordi Villà-Freixa at the Department of Basic Sciences and will be appointed to teaching practical sessions mainly in the subject of Introduction to Bioinformatics, aswell as minor contributions to other related subjects in the degrees of Biomedical Sciences and Bioengineering. According to the Spanish regulation for Doctoral students, the teaching duty during the whole PhD training period cannot exceed 18 ECTS.

The candidate will be offered a PhD Student position within the Health Sciences Doctorate Program at the UIC Barcelona. Depending of the profile of the candidate, the PhD Thesis topic can vary but in any case the contract will initially be for one year extendable to up to a total of three years.

In May 2018, the UIC Barcelona received recognition from EURAXESS via an HR Excellence in Research Award that ensures that the selection of candidates is carried out only based on criteria for excellence.

1) In line with the "Selection" principle, a selection committee is established. The process for nominating and appointing the selection committee will be transparent and will be made public. The composition of the committee will be appropriately diverse.

2) All applications will be examined. The process will involve a preselection to verify eligibility and a preselection of candidates for personal interviews. The same selection committee will participate in all the steps. The process will be fully transparent, excepte for the fact that candidates will be externally identified by an anonymous ID.

3) The final selection may include an oral (presential or online) interview.

  • The candidates are required to have a degree (BSc and MSc) at the time of enrolling in the UIC Doctorate School with highly competitive academic records.
  • Profficiency in one or more of these topics will be highly valued: quantum chemistry, QM/MM calculations, molecular simulations, structural bioinformatics, ML/DL/AI, computer science (with emphasis in Python scripting programming).
