The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) invites applications from PhD candidates in the general area of scheduling and GPU operating systems.
PhD candidate position in AI, Machine Learning and GPUs

- 36 months fixed-term contract, extendable for 1 (one) further year if needed, on full time basis (40 hrs/week)

- Start: 1st of July 2020 (at the earliest)
The PhD candidate will be a member of the Department of Computer Science (DCS) within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Luxembourg.
The successful candidate will also contribute to research activities led by his/her supervisor at the University’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT).
A limited time (up to 60h/year) might be allocated to supporting teaching activities within the Computer Science Bachelor and Master programs of the faculty.
The successful candidate will be working in the Parallel Computing and Optimisation group (https://pcog.uni.lu) headed by Prof. Pascal Bouvry, in order to strengthen the area of High Performance Computing. The application areas of interest include cloud/HPC/Edge computing.
The PhD Student is expected to pursue cutting-edge research activities in Artificial Intelligence Techniques including evolutionary algorithms, Machine Learning, and GPU programming techniques; teaching and public dissemination activities of the PCOG group. The PhD student will participate in the national Artificial Intelligence Lab between NVIDIA and Luxembourg.

Qualification: The candidate should possess an MSc degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. The successful candidates will join a strong and motivated research team lead by Prof. Pascal Bouvry in order to carry out a PhD.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have some knowledge and experience in a number of the following topics:
- GPU programming, e.g. CUDA
- Optimisation Techniques (Exact, approximated methods, or meta-heuristics)
- Machine Learning, particularly Deep Learning
- Operating systems and HPC
Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
The University offers a Ph.D. study program with a full-time (40 hrs/week) fixed-term contract for 3 years, extendable for one additional year if needed. The University is an equal opportunity employer. The candidate will work in an exciting international environment.
